Estonian and Latvian Foreign Ministers to present the Estonian-Latvian Languages Award on 10 April

Tomorrow, 10 April in Tallinn, Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser and Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs will present the annual Estonian-Latvian Languages Award in Tallinn. Both ministers will also have a bilateral meeting where they will mostly discuss bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

The foreign ministries of Estonia and Latvia have jointly presented the award since 2010. The aim of the prize is to raise awareness of Estonian and Latvian languages and recognise the work of Estonian and Latvian translators, linguists and teachers in promoting the languages. The winner is awarded €3 000, contributed equally by both ministries.

Last year, the prize was awarded to translator Rūta Karma for her translation of Viivi Luik’s novel Varjuteater (Shadow theatre). Karma has also translated works by Jaan Kaplinski, Mari Saat, Mats Traat and other Estonian authors.

The Latvian Foreign Minister is accompanying the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis on his two-day state visit to Estonia.
